Doug has 18 years working for the higher education sector and experience in the health sector and industrial organisations. First joining ASI in 2000, Doug’s initial time with ASI saw him working with client universities in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Doug returned to the higher education sector in 2003 managing The University of Auckland’s involvement the PBRF (New Zealand’s national research assessment system), where the University ranked first. Moving onto Unitec, Doug ran their PBRF assessment (top ranked Polytechnic) after which he then moved to AUT University. As AUT’s PBRF Manager for the 2012 PBRF assessment Doug helped AUT with a “significant (93.6%) increase” in funded portfolios resulting in a substantial increase in research funding. The PBRF is the largest research fund in in New Zealand. Doug’s expertise in ‘research assessment’ has led to a wider interest in research performance measurement and profiling research activity. With experience in whole organisation research assessment and broader roles in research systems resulted in engagement with central government agencies, through 2016 and 2017 primarily focused on consultation on revitalising the national research system as a whole. Doug has Master of Arts with first class honours (focusing on evaluation research) obtained from The University of Auckland. Motivated by the desire to work with a diverse range of client organisations and seeking the satisfaction of securing appointments that add substantial value to the performance of the organisation Doug returned to ASI in 2017.
