A research of Fesa, retained executive search consultant company, mapped the profile of the CEOs recently placed in pharmaceutical companies.
A recent survey made by Fesa, a retained executive search firm, mapped the profile of recently placed CEOs in the pharmaceutical industry. Approximately 22% of these executives have bachelors degrees in Pharmacy, coming in shortly after those with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (25%). Combining the executives with Pharmacy, Medicine and Biomedicine, bachelor’s degrees that number reaches 50% of CEOs positioned by consulting.
André Parternak, Vice-President at Fesa, confirms that the pharmaceutical industry tends to seek executives who are already working in the business, given its highly regulated nature. “Since the pharmaceutical sector has many regulatory requirements to be met, it often demands technical knowledge to negotiate with ANVISA (Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency). Therefore, there’s been a high demand for executives with biological sciences background.
Also according to Pasternak, ANVISA has been increasing red tape in the granting of product registration and technical certificates; as well as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) licenses, GSP (Good Storage Practices) licenses and evidence via clinical trials that prove effectiveness of drugs, factors that demand a high technical specialization, in addition to people’s management background.
“Technical graduation with a business mindset is a key differentiator in the pharmaceutical industry. Most of the times, CEO’s are likely to come from Sales and Marketing before assuming a General Manager role”, he quoted.
