We recently spoke to one of our AESC member executive Search Professionals, Oxana Brookes, who specializes in cross-border executive searches for London-based CTPartners, about how she uses BlueSteps.
What databases and resources do you use to find candidates for the searches you are working on?
Oxana Brookes: I rely on Encore, our in-house database, BlueSteps, Linked In and other similar sites.
How does BlueSteps fit into your candidate search process?
Oxana Brookes: I normally start by trying to get a couple of quick wins on BlueSteps alongside scanning our in-house database.
How many times a month do you use BlueSteps?
Oxana Brookes: Every time we start a new search and then once or twice in the middle of the search once requirements became more clear.
Have you found any candidates through BlueSteps that you have gone on to present to a client?
Oxana Brookes: Yes, definitely.
How many candidates have you sourced from BlueSteps that have ended up being presented to clients?
Oxana Brookes: On a long list, I would probably have at least 1-2 people from BlueSteps. On a shortlist, I would say closer to one in four were found in BlueSteps.
How can a candidate best present him/herself to get noticed in a marketplace that is saturated with talented people?
Oxana Brookes: A candidate’s CV needs to be crisp, not too long, well-structured and contain basic data points (the size of business in terms of turnover, number of people, etc) to help us judge whether the candidate falls into the right category. As far as CV’s are concerned, I believe you can never go wrong with using as many numbers as you possibly can.
We are more likely to approach candidates who are seen as thought leaders in their sector, so speaking at industrial events, publishing written work and gaining leadership positions with corresponding industrial bodies will be a good move to becoming visible.
Cultivate friends amongst headhunters. I am more likely to bring somebody in as a candidate if they were friendly and helpful when I rang them as a source!
