Labor Minister Carlos Lupi recently reported that Brazil’s economy had created an additional 1.5 million jobs in the first half of 2010 – on target for a total of 2.5 million new formal jobs in 2010. This is a very positive statistic for the rising Latin American nation and a sign that executives should consider recalibrating their job search to include emerging markets.
In fact, a recent report outlined that AESC search consultants believe Brazil, India and China are likely to experience the largest shortage of talent in the latter half of 2010. Essentially, it is expected there will be not enough qualified / experienced senior executives in Brazil to fill the number of new executive jobs that will be created as the economy recovers from the economic downturn (Brazil only suffered a 0.2% contraction in 2009).
Less positive, some economists have indicated that the failure of Brazil to reach the job creation targets of June is a sign of a slowing economy. However, compare the 212,952 jobs created in June in Brazil to the US where only 83,000 jobs were created. In fact the total number of jobs registered in the US decreased by 125,000 in June (it is not all bad - 225,000 jobs that disappeared were temporary 2010 census government jobs).
